This course is designed for Nutritional Practitioners, other allied healthcare professionals who work with clients with persistent pain, and individuals looking to increase their knowledge base of complex pain. The role of supplements and specific therapeutic diets in its treatment will be thoroughly explored. This 4 session long course will teach critical thinking skills for the care and identification of chronic pain, and explain the roles of other healthcare professionals in its multidisciplinary care. Recommendations for usage and dosage of nutritional therapies, special diets, and specific supplements, as well as the research on them and how they work, will be provided.

This course will cover:

  • The neurophysiology and development of complex pain
  • An overview of health conditions that involve chronic pain
  • The assessment and interviewing of different types of chronic pain
  • The role of nutrition and holistic care
  • Evidence-based recommendations
  • Available nutritional supplements and dietary protocols

CONCEPTS: Introduction to how pain is assessed using questionnaires, observation, and interviewing; Explanation of Role of other allied healthcare professions in the management of chronic pain; Overview of the role of other therapies used by those with chronic pain and implications for nutritional therapy; Different types of chronic pain; Client education on chronic pain; Recommendations for community resources; The Microbiome and pain; Genetic influences in pain

CONCEPTS: Digestive conditions (IBS/IBD) and pain; Osteoarthritis/Rheumatoid Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Pain (low back, neck, and shoulders; Ehlers Danlos Syndrome; Nutritional Therapy and Herbal medicine for the above; Allied and complementary therapy for the above conditions.

ADVANCED CONCEPT: Specific Health Conditions Chronic Pain and therapy Part 2
CONCEPTS: Nervous system conditions (MS, Stroke); Central Sensitivity Syndromes (Fibromyalgia, TMJ disorder, Migraine Headaches); Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS); Nutritional therapy and Herbal medicine for the above; Allied and complementary therapy for the above.
