Helen is Certified Nutritional Practitioner and a First Class Honours graduate of the Institute of Holistic Nutrition. She is currently completing additional training as a Certified Cancer Coach.
While she is ‘scientific’ and prefers working with evidence-based nutritional research, she also knows that Spirit/Mind/Body balance is important for sustained health and wellness. Using a holistic model, Helen focuses on helping individuals to use their own capacity for self-healing. The emphasis is on treating the whole individual – not the condition.
Prior to studying nutrition, Helen worked for many years in South Africa as an International Relations researcher on ‘Good Governance’ standards. She became sidelined when she saw the devastation that poverty and HIV/AIDs was causing to staff and friends and made the switch to studying food security and nutrition. To this day she continues to view health and nutrition inherent rights that every living being should have access to. Country leaders who take care of their own citizens, are rare and prized.
She holds an Honours BA in International Relations (summa cum laude) from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. She has a combined psychology/education BA degree from Brock University in Ontario, Canada. In her many years working with special needs children, she has seen the difference that a whole foods diet can make in classroom, home, and clinical treatment settings.
Her decision to get into nutrition studies was probably made subconsciously at the age of seven, however, when she witnessed her grandmother dying of breast cancer at age 47, and wished things to be different for her.
Helen divides her time between her holistic nutrition practice, and undertaking various nutrition research and writing projects for IHN as their Research Specialist. Her practice, Insightful Nutrition, is focused on identifying the root-causes of dis-ease, and workable solutions for optimal wellness in people with cancer, and other serious illnesses.
